Who’s Teaching This Course?
Hi there! I’m Erin McKnight.
I was raised on a mixed farm and out of high school I initially pursued a nursing career, only to return to rural Saskatchewan and began ranching alongside my husband. My background in nursing emphasized the importance of comprehensive training, a departure from the informal, learn-as-you-go approach prevalent in the ranching world. While this approach suited me, it offers little support for newcomers eager to learn about ranching.
Initially, our training for new ranch employees focused on basic ranch layout and operations. Unfortunately, we often overestimated their existing knowledge, resulting in frustration for both parties and a less-than-ideal start.
To address this challenge, I began developing checklists and training materials, initially in response to common misunderstandings. Over time, this evolved into structured lessons, often inspired by my own experiences and mistakes.
My passion lies in cultivating careers in agriculture, a vibrant and dynamic field. Offering foundational knowledge from the start can significantly improve success and job retention in these demanding roles.
